Reflexology is the physical act of applying pressure to the feet, hand, or ears with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques. Reflexology is, in part, based on the meridian system of acupuncture. The areas to which pressure is applied typically coincide with the acupoints of acupuncture. Meridians, and their associated acupoints, relate to specific organs and systems of the body. Stimulation of the associated acupoints effects a change to the organs associated with that meridian.
Reflexology has also been called zone therapy. The name zone therapy is based on the notion that each region of the body is represented on the hands and feet. The specific areas of the hands or feet, or the zone, to which pressure is applied, coincide with specific areas of the body. Stimulation of these zones on the hands or feet effects a change to the corresponding area of the body.
