BOWEN THERAPY

In our fast paced society, many people are running around in a chronically stressed mode.  A growing apprehension exists, which is becoming increasingly evident, that stressful human existence is contributing to a decline in the overall health of society.  Chronic stress is becoming more evident in today’s society, and, in fact, has become a way of life.  The pressure of planning a schedule down to the microsecond level has become the norm of today's society.  If that is not stressful enough, trying to squeeze 25 hours out of the 24 available each day adds to the stress of everyday life.  With all this stress, the body is constantly in fight or flight mode, and when relaxation calls, it gets a busy signal.  The body cannot effectively heal itself when under chronic stress.  As a result of all this stress, chronic disease is just on the horizon.  The good news is that stress can be reduced through natural means.  In reducing stress, the body is better able to heal itself naturally.

Bowen therapy is a hands on healing technique developed by Tom Bowen in 1950s.  The Bowen technique is a gentle, but powerful, technique that sends nerve impulses to the brain resulting in muscle relaxation, balance of the nervous system, and pain reduction.  Bowen therapy creates energy surges in the body to stimulate the body in a way that restores proper muscle tension and balance of the nervous system.  In restoring proper muscle tension, the function of the joints and muscles are normalized.  In balancing the nervous system, specifically getting the body out of the fight or flight mode, overall stress is then reduced.  As a result, overall health is improved.

During a Bowen session, the practitioner uses their hands in a rolling type motion over specific muscles and tendons of the body.  This is motion is called either the movement or the Bowen movement.  The areas worked on depend on the problems the client is having.  Between each movement, the practitioner leaves the room, allowing the body to make its own internal adjustments.  A typical Bowen session lasts approximately thirty to forty-five minutes.  Initially, the practitioner will most likely schedule three sessions, one week apart.

Many people experience relief following two or three treatments.  Even after one treatment, many people report feeling more relaxed.  In some cases, particularly when chronic disorders, such as fibromyalgia, are present, more treatments will be required.

Bowen therapy is reported to be effective for:

Pain relief
Speeding the recovery time of injuries
Fibromyalgia
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Stress reduction
Reduction of muscle spasms
Balance the nervous system
More restorative sleep
Reduction of energetic blocks
An improved outlook on life
Improved lymphatic flow
Reduction of low back pain
Improved circulation
